We are seeking a diverse group of dedicated individuals who have a strong interest in serving the community by becoming a member of the Guelph Police Service. Basic Minimum Requirements
To be considered for a career in policing, you must meet certain minimum requirements as outlined in the Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA). Specifically, you MUST:
  1. Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
  2. Be at least 18 years of age.
  3. Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position, having regard to your own safety and the safety of members of the public.
  4. Have successfully completed at least four years of secondary school education or equivalent as per the CSPA. (Note: official transcripts and diplomas will be required.) Where education has been completed outside Ontario, official proof of equivalency must be obtained by contacting the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training. See approved list of private agencies that provide accepted document assessments services for a fee.
  5. Be of good moral character, meaning that you are an individual other people would look upon as being trustworthy and having integrity.

In addition, you MUST:

  1. Possess a valid driver's licence with no more than six accumulated demerit-points, permitting you to drive an automobile in Ontario with full driving privileges.
  2. Have a current certification in CPR and First Aid - Level C.
  3. Be able to pass a security clearance as well as background investigation, credit and reference checks. If you have any criminal convictions under a federal statute, you must obtain a pardon. If you have ‘Findings of Guilt’ which have resulted in absolute or conditional discharges, the records must be ‘sealed’ by the RCMP

Experienced Officers

To apply as an experienced officer, you must be a currently serving officer in Canada and have served a minimum of one year with your current police service. Experienced military police officers, use this process to apply, please note you may still be required to attend the Ontario Police College for Basic Constable Training once hired.

 Constable Hiring Process
  1. Submit your completed application. It remains active for one year from the date received.
  2. Shuttle Run. This will always be the first step after submitting your completed application. 
  3. Applicants will complete a Pre-background Questionnaire and review it with the Recruiter. 
  4. A Local Focus Interview based on local knowledge, developmental and some essential competencies - One on one with a Recruiter.
  5. An Essential Competencies Interview with two Recruiters.
  6. The Ontario Fitness PIN test. This will be conducted as a part of the candidate's overall evaluation and is not considered a pass or fail assessment. Rather, this is a tool used by the Guelph Police Service that helps to determine overall suitability for the position.
  7. Career interview with Recruiter.
  8. Driving evaluation.
  9. Psychological evaluation. This consists of a written portion and an interview to determine suitability.
  10. Background investigation. This is an extensive investigation into the background and suitability of the candidate.
  11. Conditional offer of employment, contingent upon a subsequent medical examination, and completion of the Ontario Police College Basic Constable Training.

Please be advised that some of the steps may occur out of order, but candidates are required to be successful at each stage. The process is competitive and candidates can be eliminated or deferred at any point.

 Essential Competencies

If you are not an experienced officer and would like to apply, keep in mind the competencies that the Guelph Police Service are looking for:

  1. Analytical Thinking: The ability to analyze situations and events in a logical way, and to organize the parts of a problem in a systematic way.

  2. Self-confidence: A belief in your own abilities and judgement and a recognition of personal limitations and development needs.

  3. Communication: The ability to demonstrate effective listening, verbal and written communication skills.

  4. Flexibility/Valuing Diversity: The ability to adapt your approach in a variety of situations and to work effectively with a wide cross-section of the community representing diverse background, cultures and socio-economic circumstances.

  5. Relationship Building: The ability to develop and maintain a network of contacts, both inside and outside the police service

  6. Achievement Orientation: The desire for continuous improvement in service or accomplishments

  7. Medical/Physical Skills and Abilities: Job-related medical/physical skills and abilities, including vision, hearing, motor skills, cardiovascular endurance and upper-body strength

  8. Self-Control: The ability to keep your emotions under control and to restrain negative actions when provoked or when working under stressful conditions.
