Impaired and stunt driving charges

A Guelph male faces impaired and stunt driving charges after being caught doing more than twice the speed limit with more than twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Early Saturday morning, Guelph Police Service officers were conducting speed enforcement in the area of Victoria Road North and Greenview Street. Approximately 12:33 a.m. a Mazda motor vehicle was caught on radar travelling 102 km/h in the posted 50 km/h zone.

The vehicle was stopped and a strong odour of alcoholic beverage was detected coming from the driver. He failed a roadside screening test and was returned to the police station for further testing, which confirmed he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 20-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving, stunt driving, speeding and novice driver having alcohol in his system. His driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 14 days. He will appear in a Guelph court June 7, 2022.

 

$60k in product stolen in break and enter

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after more than $60,000 in product was stolen during a break and enter early Sunday.

Approximately 4:45 a.m. officers were dispatched to a break-in which had just occurred at Stone Road Mall. Security advised four males used a sledgehammer to break into the mall and then break into one of the businesses inside.

The males were inside less than one minute. More than $60,000 in product was reportedly stolen.

The males were described as black, wearing hoodies, sweatpants and gloves. One was carrying a sledgehammer and one was carrying plastic bins which were used to remove the products. They fled in a white SUV.

Female arrested in motel fire

A Guelph female faces an arson charge after a fire Friday at a local hotel.

Emergency personnel were dispatched just after 3 a.m. Friday to a hotel in the area of Silvercreek Parkway North and Woodlawn Road West. A couch in one of the rooms had been on fire but was quickly extinguished by staff.

An investigation by the Guelph Fire Department determined the fire was intentionally set.

A 60-year-old Guelph female was located later Friday morning and has been charged with arson. She was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in a Guelph court May 20, 2022.

 

Business staff assaulted

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after two employees of a downtown business were assaulted early Sunday.

Police were called just after 1 a.m. to a business on Wyndham Street North. Staff reported a male tried to bring a glass bottle outside which would violate the business’ liquor licence. The male was stopped and became aggressive, smashing a glass against the back of the employee’s head and causing it to bleed profusely.

A second employee intervened and the suspect punched her in the face. The male employee attended hospital for treatment.

The suspect is described as a white male, 25-30 years of age, six feet, 200 pounds, with dirty blonde hair in a ponytail and wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

Impaired driving and drug charges

A Guelph male faces impaired driving and drug charges after he was found slumped over the steering wheel of a running vehicle Sunday evening.

Just after 6 p.m. emergency personnel were called to the area of Silvercreek Parkway North and Paisley Road. The male was located passed out inside the running vehicle.

He was awakened and showed signs of being impaired by a drug. He was arrested, and a subsequent search of the male and his vehicle revealed two baggies of unknown white powder and small amounts of suspected cocaine, methamphetamine, ecstasy and Xanax as well as more than $1,100 in cash.

A 68-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation, possessing a controlled substance and possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. He will appear in a Guelph court July 5, 2022.
