Suspicious fire under investigation

The Guelph Police Service is investigating a suspicious fire at an abandoned house.

Approximately 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, the Guelph Police Service and the Guelph Fire Department were called to an abandoned house on College Avenue West for a report of a fire. The Guelph Fire Department was able to quickly put out the fire.

Damage to the house is considered minor and no injuries were reported. The fire is considered suspicious and police have initiated an arson investigation. Officers remained on scene overnight as the investigation continues.

Two arrested for impaired driving

Two Guelph males were arrested for impaired driving overnight, including one who almost hit city workers installing a new Pride crosswalk downtown.

Approximately 2 a.m., a vehicle left the downtown area. As it approached the intersection of Norfolk Street and Waterloo Avenue, the vehicle mounted a median before re-entering the roadway. The vehicle drove over construction signs and continued through the intersection past the workers.

The vehicle was stopped a short distance away and the driver was showing signs of impairment. He failed a roadside breath test and was transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 19-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving and novice driver having alcohol in his system. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 90 days. He will appear in a Guelph court June 13, 2023.

Earlier in the night, approximately 10:45 p.m., an officer patrolling on Victoria Street North observed a sports car driving erratically, nearly striking the median on two occasions. As the officer followed the vehicle, it was observed to strike two parked vehicles and continue driving.

A traffic stop was conducted and the driver showed obvious signs of impairment. He failed a roadside breath test and was transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 32-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 90 days. He will appear in a Guelph court June 6, 2023.

 

Prohibited driver arrested

A Rockwood male had his vehicle seized for 45 days after he was caught driving while prohibited in Guelph Thursday night.

Just after 10 p.m. and officer was patrolling on Gordon Street near Harvard Road when he observed a vehicle weaving within its lane and conducted a traffic stop. Investigation revealed the driver is currently prohibited from driving.

A 40-year-old Guelph male is charged with driving while prohibited. His vehicle was impounded for 45 days. He will appear in a Guelph court July 7, 2023.
