Anyone working in a retail environment is encouraged to review a new Retail Safety and Security Guide which was released Monday.

The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police worked with the Retail Council of Canada, Workplace Safety and Prevention Services and the Toronto Police Service to publish the Guide, which is intended to help retail businesses of all sizes prevent and reduce crime incidents and keep their customers and staff safe. The Guide’s release coincides with national Small Business Week.

The Guide provides information to help businesses:retail guide

  • Make their businesses less vulnerable to crime
  • Identify and select an appropriate response to address retail crime
  • Outline methods to prevent and address the most common forms of retail crime, including robbery, break and enter, fraud and shoplifting
  • Review techniques to address abusive customers, suspicious individuals, intoxicated individuals and those experiencing a mental health crisis
  • Provide measures to address or prevent violence in the workplace between customers or between customers and staff.
