Share the road

The Guelph Coalition for Active Transportation (GCAT) and the Guelph Police are working together to enhance bicycle safety within our city.  Although the riding season for some is year round, as we approach spring, motor vehicles and cyclists sharing the road becomes a more common concern. The responsibility lies on both cyclist and driver.

For the cyclist, remember to ride on the right. You must stay as close to the right edge of the road whenever possible, especially if you're slower than other traffic.

For the driver, you must leave a distance of at least one-metre (3 feet) while passing a bicyclist. A set fine of $85 was established and a set fine of $150 in community safe zones. 2 demerit points are to apply upon conviction.

Over the weekend, St. Patrick’s Day, the Guelph Police will be operating a R.I.D.E. Program. In conjunction with GCAT, a postcard size PSA in regard to this sharing the road rule will be handed out to drivers that go through the program.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend. Drive and ride safe.
