$13k in fentanyl, shotgun and other weapons seized

A Guelph man faces drug and weapons charges after police recovered $13,000 worth of fentanyl, a sawed-off shotgun and other weapons from a south-end apartment Wednesday.

Earlier this summer members of the Guelph Police Service Drug Enforcement and Break Enter Auto Theft units began an investigation into a male alleged to be supplying fentanyl to vulnerable people in the downtown and other areas of Guelph.

On Wednesday evening a search warrant was executed with assistance from members of the Guelph Police Service Tactics and Rescue Unit at an apartment in the area of College Avenue West and Vanier Drive.

As a result of the search officers recovered quantities of fentanyl and psilocybin, a shotgun with ammunition, a replica handgun, cash and other weapons including prohibited knives, bear spray and brass knuckles.

A 55-year-old Guelph man faces charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking, possessing a controlled substance, possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition, three counts of possessing a prohibited weapon, possessing weapons for a dangerous purpose and possessing property obtained by crime.

He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.

“Fentanyl continues to harm individuals, families and communities,” said Guelph Police Chief Gord Cobey. “We will continue to target those responsible for trafficking these dangerous drugs and jeopardizing public safety.”
