Former Chief McCart passes away

The Guelph Police Service is saddened to learn of the recent passing of former Chief William (Bill) McCart.

Chief McCart joined the Guelph Police Force – as it was then known – as a 19-year-old cadet in 1949. After working his way through the ranks and developing a reputation as a keen investigator in the Criminal Investigation Bureau, he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Operations in 1980.

He served as acting chief beginning in September, 1985, and on January 1, 1986, officially assumed the role following the retirement of Chief Lorne Halls.

Chief McCart retired on April 30, 1988, following 38 years of service to the citizens of Guelph.

“He’s a policeman’s policeman and his great attribute is fairness,” then-Mayor John Counsell said at the time as the Guelph Police Commission accepted Chief McCart’s notice of retirement.
