Former Deputy Chief passes away
The Guelph Police Service is saddened to learn of the passing of former Deputy Chief William Thomas (Tom) Mayes earlier this month.

Deputy Chief Mayes joined the Guelph Police Force -- as it was then known – as a cadet in March, 1949. He became a sergeant in 1961 and continued working his way through the ranks until being named deputy chief in April, 1980. He retired just under two years later, in March 1981, with 33 years of service to the community.
Deputy Chief Mayes was predeceased by his beloved wife Jean, with whom he shared 37 years of marriage until her passing in 1988. He was also predeceased by his son Glen (2008) and his daughter‑in‑law Barb (2024).
He will be missed by his three children, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. Those wishing to honour his memory may consider a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to Cancer Research.
The Guelph Police Service sends our condolences to Deputy Chief Mayes’ family and friends.
