Security guard assaulted, man arrested

A Guelph man faces charges after a security guard at a downtown business was assaulted Thursday evening.

Approximately 8:35 p.m. the complainant asked a man to leave the vestibule of a business near St. George’s Square. The man threw his backpack at the security guard then pulled out a wooden stick and struck the guard twice. The guard was not injured.

Officers located the suspect nearby and arrested him. A 29-year-old Guelph man is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon. He will appear in court June 30. (Occurrence number GU26022908)

 

$9,100 lost in crypto scam

Residents are reminded to be very cautious when dealing with unknown individuals after a Guelph resident lost more than $9,000 to a cryptocurrency scam.

Officers were called just before 8 p.m. to a business downtown. The victim said they were contacted by someone claiming to represent the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. The caller said the victim’s identity had been compromised and provided instructions to deposit $9,100 into a Bitcoin ATM.

The victim withdrew the funds from their line of credit and sent it as instructed, but when they tried to confirm the money had been received was told it was a scam.

Residents are encouraged to be wary of any telephone call, email or text which requires you to take immediate action. It is always best to independently contact the supposed sender and confirm the legitimacy of the correspondence before taking action.

Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. Even if no financial loss has been sustained, interactions can still be reported to the CAFC. (Occurrence number GU26022900)

 

Arrest in copper wire theft

A Guelph man was arrested Thursday after thousands of dollars in copper wire was stolen from a west-end business.

Just before 7 a.m. staff of a business on Speedvale Avenue West reported two suspects had been observed on the property at 6:30 a.m. The two were confronted and left the area.

A couple of hours later, staff called back after discovering approximately $7,000 worth of copper wire had been stolen. Officers reviewed security camera footage and recognized one of the men.

Approximately 2 p.m. the man was located walking through a parking lot in the east end and arrested. During a search officers located 30 .22-calibre rounds of ammunition.

A 46-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter, careless storage of ammunition, breach of probation and failing to attend court. He was held for a bail hearing Friday. (Occurrence numbers GU26022708, GU26022812)

 

Cabbie assaulted, man arrested

A Guelph man was arrested early Thursday after a taxi driver was assaulted while driving.

Shortly after midnight officers were called to the area of Willow Road and Silvercreek Parkway North. The victim reported they were driving when a passenger attempted several times to hit them and also pulled the driver’s hoodie.

The passenger was dropped off in a parking lot. Officers located the 39-year-old Guelph man in the area and he was placed under arrest for assault and obtain transportation by fraud. He will appear in court June 30. (Occurrence number GU26022684)
