Arrest in ‘bank investigator’ scams

A Guelph man has been arrested in connection with so-called ‘bank investigator’ scams targeting older adults.

Last July, three Guelph residents in their 90s reported being contacted by people claiming to represent their banks. During these conversations the victims provided their banking information and were eventually convinced to hand over their debit and credit cards for destruction.

A man attended the victims’ homes and collected the cards, which were later used to make thousands of dollars in withdrawals and purchases.

On Saturday a 26-year-old Guelph man was arrested for two counts of fraud over $5,000 and seven counts of unauthorized use of a credit card. He will appear in a Guelph court July 3. (Occurrence numbers GU25047901, GU26023220)

Three impaired driving arrests

Three Guelph residents were arrested for impaired driving on the weekend, including one found sitting in his van with the airbags deployed.

Just after 8 a.m. Sunday officers were called to Vanier Drive after witnesses observed a van spinning its tires resulting in a lot of smoke. Officers arrived to find the van with the front axle damaged and airbags deployed. The driver had a strong odour of alcohol on his breath and was unsteady on his feet when exiting the vehicle.

He was arrested and transported to the police station where tests confirmed he had twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 22-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.

Also this weekend:

·        A 69-year-old Guelph woman was arrested for impaired driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance after officers responded to a driving complaint in the west end Saturday night

·        A 49-year-old Guelph man was arrested for impaired driving and breaching a probation order following another driving complaint in the west end Saturday night.

All three drivers had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. They were released with upcoming court dates.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be responsible if they choose to consume alcohol and cannabis. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911. (Occurrence numbers GU26023392, GU26023404, GU26023475)
