Stolen car crashed, man arrested

A Guelph man faces charges after a stolen car was involved in a collision in a busy parking lot.

Just after 4 p.m. Friday police were called to the parking lot of Walmart on Woodlawn Road West. A driver had lost control of an SUV, mounting a curb and colliding with a sign and tree before hitting a parked car.

The owner of the SUV arrived on scene and told officers the driver did not have permission to drive it.

A 36-year-old Guelph man is charged with taking a vehicle without consent and dangerous driving. He will appear in court May 29. (Occurrence number GU26024883)

 

Man found sleeping in rental unit

A Niagara Falls man was arrested Friday after he was found sleeping in a Guelph rental unit.

Police were dispatched to a south-end home just after 6:30 a.m. The property manager said he has been showing the unit to potential tenants, but when he arrived Friday morning found a man sleeping in one of the beds and a large amount of mud and dirt on the floor.

Investigation revealed the man is currently on bail with conditions that he remain in his residence at all times and not attend Guelph.

A 29-year-old Niagara Falls man is charged with break, enter and mischief and breaching a release order. He will appear in bail court April 27. (Occurrence number GU26024704)

 

Stunt drivers taken off road

Two drivers were taken off the road in Guelph this weekend after they were stopped for stunt driving.

Approximately 10:30 p.m. Friday a member of the Guelph Police Service Traffic Unit was stopped at a red light at Gordon Street and Edinburgh Road South when he heard a vehicle approaching from behind due to its loud exhaust.

He observed a Corvette making a quick U-turn, causing the rear end to fishtail and then speeding away. The officer turned around and followed the sports car, observing it travelling more than 100 km/h before finally pulling it over.

A 21-year-old Oakville man is charged with stunt driving, speeding and careless driving.

Just over 24 hours later, the same officer was conducting speed enforcement on Gordon Street at Maltby Road when he clocked a Nissan travelling 103 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone. A 23-year-old Guelph man is charged with stunt driving and speeding.

Both drivers had their licences suspended for 30 days and their vehicles impounded for 14 days. A stunt driving conviction will attract a minimum licence suspension of one year, a minimum fine of $2,000 and six demerit points. (Occurrence numbers GU26024962, GU26025255)

 

Arrest in stolen vehicle investigation

A Guelph man has been arrested after he was caught on camera last month driving a stolen SUV.

On March 20, a stolen 2025 Ford Escape was observed entering the parking lot of an apartment building on Waterloo Avenue. Officers reviewed security video and were able to identify the driver.

On Friday afternoon a 51-year-old Guelph man was arrested for possessing stolen property over $5,000. He will appear in court July 7. (Occurrence number GU26018113)

 

Impaired on e-bike

A Guelph man is charged with impaired driving after officers were called Friday night to an east-end business.

Just before midnight officers were called to a business on York Road, where they found an e-bike parked with the keys in the ignition and two six-packs of beer on the footrest.

While officers were on scene they were approached by a man carrying an empty beer can who was identified by witnesses as the driver of the e-bike. The man appeared intoxicated and had a strong odour of alcohol on his breath.

After failing a roadside breath test he was transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 33-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his e-bike was impounded for seven days.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be responsible if they choose to consume alcohol and cannabis. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home.
