Arrest in cocaine trafficking investigation

A Brampton man was arrested Monday following a Guelph Police Service investigation into cocaine trafficking in the city.

Earlier this summer, the Guelph Police Drug Enforcement Unit began an investigation into a man believed to be trafficking cocaine in Guelph. Just after 1 p.m. Monday he was arrested as he exited his vehicle in an east-end parking lot.

Following his arrest search warrants were executed on his vehicle and a residence in Brampton. Officers recovered cocaine valued at approximately $3,300 as well as more than $1,700 in cash, a digital scale and drug packaging.

A 34-year-old Brampton man is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking. He will appear in court November 3. (Occurrence number GU26034165)

Machete wielded in dispute, man arrested

A Guelph man faces assault and weapons charges after a machete was wielded during a dispute Monday outside a social service agency.

Police were called at 11:30 a.m. after witnesses reported a man stopped his car outside the agency and exited with a machete in his hand. He held the weapon out as he approached another man before a bystander intervened and the suspect fled.

The incident was allegedly the continuation of an earlier altercation elsewhere in the downtown. The two men are not known to each other.

A 39-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault with a weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He will appear in court November 3. (Occurrence number GU26053309)

Impaired driver asks police for help

Two Guelph men were arrested for impaired driving Monday, including one who flagged down police for help while apparently experiencing drug-induced hallucinations.

Just after 9:30 a.m. officers were on bicycle patrol near the skateboard park at Wellington Street West and Edinburgh Road South when they saw a pickup stopped on a pedestrian path. The driver exited the truck and asked police for help as he could hear people screaming in the bushes.

He claimed to hear the screaming while speaking to officers --  who couldn’t hear anything – and also believed he could see people in the bushes.

The man was arrested and transported to the police station, where an officer trained in drug evaluation concluded his ability to operate a vehicle was impaired by drugs.

A 51-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation. He will appear in court September 22.

At 9:45 p.m. Monday an officer conducting speed enforcement on Gordon Street clocked a pickup travelling 67 km/h in a 40 km/h zone. While speaking to the driver the officer detected an odour of alcohol and could see an open can of beer.

After failing a roadside breath test the driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 34-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation and speeding. He will appear in court September 25. Both drivers had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be responsible if they choose to consume alcohol and cannabis. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home.
