Knife pulled on taxi driver

A Guelph man faces several assault and weapons charges after a taxi driver was punched in the face and had a knife pulled on him Thursday.

Police were called for a disturbance near St. George’s Square at 1:40 p.m. Investigation revealed a man had taken a cab downtown and told the driver he needed to cash a cheque before paying the fare. The man entered a bank but then exited out another door where he was confronted by the driver.

The victim was punched in the face and kicked in the leg before the other man pulled a knife out of his backpack and uttered a threat. The suspect fled but was located by police and arrested a short distance away. The knife was recovered from a flowerbed.

A 65-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, uttering threats, transportation fraud and two counts of breaching a probation order. He was held for a bail hearing Friday. (Occurrence number GU26054131)

Arrest after sexual assault in city park

A Guelph man faces several charges after a woman reported being sexually assaulted in a city park early Thursday.

Just before 8 a.m. the woman attended the Guelph Police Service station to report the incident. She had travelled to Guelph in the early-morning hours to meet a man with whom she had been communicating on social media for about a week.

She said they went to a park to talk and she was sexually assaulted. The woman was transported to Guelph General Hospital for treatment.

A 21-year-old Guelph man was arrested later Thursday. He is charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm, sexual assault, assault, forcible confinement and breaching a probation order. He was held for a bail hearing Friday. (Occurrence number GU26054046)

Impaired charges after two collisions

Three motorists were arrested in Guelph for impaired driving in the last 24 hours, including two who were involved in collisions.

Just before 10 a.m. Thursday police were called to Mountford Drive, where a parked vehicle had been struck causing significant damage to both vehicles. Officers noted signs of impairment from the driver and observed three empty liquor bottles and an open can of beer inside the car. Witnesses described the car speeding and almost hitting a pedestrian before the collision. The driver was placed under arrest and during a search an officer located a quantity of suspected cocaine.

Breath tests at the police station confirmed the man had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 29-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, possessing a controlled substance and driving without insurance.

Approximately 3:30 a.m. Friday police were called to a townhouse complex on Dawson Road for reports of someone banging on doors and loudly revving his car in the parking lot. The man had tried to flee when confronted by a resident and reversed into another vehicle.

Officers arrived and immediately noted signs of impairment. The man was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 36-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.

Also Friday, a 24-year-old Cambridge man was arrested for impaired driving and speeding after he was clocked driving 88 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone near Fife Road and Elmira Road South. Breath tests revealed he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

Each of the accused had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be responsible if they choose to consume alcohol and cannabis. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Business entered

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a north-end business was entered early Thursday.

Approximately 5:15 a.m. police were called to a business near George Street and Dufferin Street. A security guard had been dispatched to investigate an alarm call and discovered an air conditioner had been pushed in allowing access to the building.

Security video showed two males gaining entry to the business approximately 3:30 a.m. It is not known if anything was stolen.
