Thousands in jewelry stolen from home
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry and other items were stolen during a break-in to a south-end home.
On Saturday a resident near Ironwood Road and Hilldale Crescent reported she had arrived home after being away for several days to find her house ransacked. A rear door had been smashed to gain entry with drawers and cupboards in most rooms left open and items strewn about.
Thousands of dollars in jewelry, silverware, cash and identity documents were reported missing.

Officers are also investigating a break-in to a second south-end home. On Friday evening police were notified of a residential burglary alarm at a home near Downey Road and Pheasant Run Drive.

Man arrested in stolen car
A Guelph man faces charges after he was found sleeping in a stolen car Saturday morning.
Approximately 10:20 a.m. an officer patrolling in a Gordon Street townhouse complex located a Toyota which had been reported stolen from a south-end business a few days earlier. A man was observed sleeping inside with the keys in his lap.
Investigation revealed the man was also wanted on a warrant after a resident of Elizabeth Street reported a man known to him had walked into his house and challenged him to a fight earlier this month. The complainant declined and the male left.
A 35-year-old Guelph man is charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000, being unlawfully in a dwelling and breaching a probation order. He will appear in court November 13. (Occurrence number GU26056321)
A different kind of jailbreak
It’s not often you hear of people breaking into a prison, but that was the situation in Guelph Saturday evening.
Just before 7:30 p.m. police were called to the former Guelph Correctional Centre on York Road after security guards observed two people on camera inside the building.
Officers arrived and cleared the building. An insecure entry was located leading to a tunnel which connects to the basement. Officers assisted security in resecuring the entry.

Impaired driving arrest
A Guelph man faces impaired driving charges following a traffic stop early Saturday.
Just after 2 a.m. police were informed of a possible impaired driver near Speedvale Avenue West and Imperial Road North and located the vehicle as it entered a parking lot. While speaking to the driver officers noted a strong odour of alcohol and other signs of impairment. After failing a roadside breath test he was transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
A 31-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and several Highway Traffic Act violations. His licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle – which is registered to his girlfriend – was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court October 6.
The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be responsible if they choose to consume alcohol and cannabis. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home.
