Cap guns lead to gunpoint arrests

Three Guelph youths learned the dangers of playing around with toy guns after they were arrested at gunpoint Saturday night.

Just before 9 p.m. police were called by a motorist who reported people pointing firearms out the windows of a car on Edinburgh Road South.

Officers from the Tactics and Rescue Unit located the car near Edinburgh Road South and Allan Avenue and conducted a high-risk traffic stop, ordering the occupants from the car at gunpoint. A search of the vehicle revealed three cap guns.

The three males – aged 17 to 19 – were cautioned for possessing weapons for a dangerous purpose and released without charges.

Residents are reminded that fake or replica firearms can cause tremendous upset if witnesses believe they are real. Officers responding to such calls must respond as if the involved firearms are real until proven otherwise.

Arrest after single-vehicle crash

A Guelph man was arrested after fleeing a single-vehicle crash Friday night.

Just before 8 p.m. Friday, police were called to Janefield Avenue and Torch Lane after the driver of a white pickup lost control, left the road and slammed into a hydro pole. The driver was seen getting into the passenger seat of another vehicle and leaving the area.

Security video from a nearby home showed the truck travelling at a high rate of speed before the driver lost control, drove across a sidewalk and hit the pole.

On Saturday evening the owner of the truck was located and arrested. A 32-year-old Guelph man is charged with dangerous driving and failing to remain. He will appear in court January 6.

Vehicle stolen while warming up

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a car was stolen while warming up Friday and then later recovered by the owner.

Just after 7 a.m. police were called to Guelph General Hospital after a car was reported stolen from the parking lot. It had been left running with the keys in the ignition.

A short time later the owner called police again to report she had tracked the car to the downtown area, where she confronted a woman seen on security video and retrieved her keys. The car was located nearby.

Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the suspect, who was described as being in her late 20s or 30s with bright red hair (possibly a wig) and wearing a black winter jacket, blue hospital pants and black sandals.

Just after 7 p.m. an officer was patrolling near Gordon Street and Arkell Road when he saw a pickup being driven erratically. The truck was pulled over and the officer immediately detected a strong odour of alcohol and could see open and sealed cans of beer inside.

The driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests revealed he had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 45-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was suspended for seven days. He will appear in court December 16.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly.
