Man arrested in cruiser-ramming with kids

A Guelph man has been arrested in connection with a recent incident in which a man rammed a police cruiser and fled with two young children in his vehicle.

Approximately 7:45 p.m. last Friday police were dispatched to an address on Speedvale Avenue East for a report of a suspicious vehicle. Officers found a male sleeping in the driver’s seat with two young children strapped into car seats in the back. The man said he had driven a friend to that address and was waiting for her to come back. He provided a name later determined to be fake.

While officers were conducting further investigation, the man reversed the car, striking a cruiser and causing minor damage, then fled at a high speed.

The vehicle was later located near Victoria Road North and Brant Avenue and the children were safe inside a nearby residence. The Guelph Police Break Enter Auto Theft Unit was able to identify the involved male.

On Wednesday afternoon the man was located and arrested following a brief foot pursuit. A search of his person revealed a folding knife and small amount of suspected crystal methamphetamine.

A 48-year-old Guelph man faces a number of charges including dangerous driving, obstructing police, flight from police, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a controlled substance, two counts of breaching a probation order and four counts of breaching a bail order. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.

Delivery car stolen while running

A pizza delivery driver saw his shift end early Wednesday after his car was stolen from in front of the restaurant.

Just after 6 p.m. police were called to a business on Stone Road West. A 2002 Toyota Camry had been left running outside while the owner prepared his next delivery inside the business. When he went outside the car was gone. His wallet and phone were inside, as well as a debit machine and iPad owner by the store.

Security video showed another vehicle stopping behind the stolen one. A passenger exited that vehicle, got into the Toyota and drove away. He was described as a white male with an average build and wearing a hoodie with the hood up.

Would-be thieves heard planning crime

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after three would-be thieves were heard discussing how to steal a Guelph woman’s jewelry Tuesday morning.

A Guelph woman reported she was walking to her vehicle outside the Walmart on Stone Road West approximately 10 a.m. Tuesday when she was approached by a man and two women in a vehicle. The woman overheard the man speaking Serbian to the two passengers and telling them to get the woman to lean into the vehicle so they could steal her jewelry. The complainant quickly walked to her vehicle.

The suspect male was described as having a heavy build and dark hair. The two female passengers had thin builds; one with a headscarf tied at the neck and the other with dark hair. They were driving a grey van or SUV.

Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Todd Van Iersel at 519-824-1212, ext. 7557, email tvaniersel@guelphpolice.ca, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.

Police services across Ontario have seen an increase in these distraction-type thefts. Typically older adults are approached by individuals in a vehicle and engaged in conversation, during which a female passenger will attempt to initiate physical contact by hugging or attempting to place jewelry on the victim. Afterwards the victim realizes their jewelry has been stolen.

Residents should be extremely cautious when approached by individuals not known to them. Try to avoid physical contact and note any identifying information, such as physical descriptions and licence plates.

Security video captured an image of a person of interest. He was described as a white male in his mid-20s to mid-30s, tall and thin with short brown hair. He was wearing a green winter jacket over a Toronto Blue Jays jersey, dark pants and black Nike running shoes.

Anyone with information or who recognizes the man in the attached photo is asked to call Constable Todd Van Iersel at 519-824-1212, ext. 7557, email tvaniersel@guelphpolice.ca, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.
