Driver arrested, vehicle seized indefinitely

A Guelph man saw his vehicle seized indefinitely Thursday after he was caught driving while suspended for the second time in four days.

Approximately 3:15 p.m. an officer was patrolling downtown when his cruiser’s automated licence plate reader alerted to a vehicle owned by a suspended driver.  The car was pulled over and the owner confirmed to be behind the wheel.

A 64-year-old Guelph man was arrested for driving while suspended and driving without insurance. While he was being searched the officer located two summons issued four days earlier by another police service for the same offences.

To prevent continuation of the offences the vehicle was seized under the Highway Traffic Act. He will appear in court in March.

Also Thursday, a Milton man was arrested after he was caught driving while prohibited with a stolen licence plate on his truck. An officer conducted a traffic stop near Fair Road and Arrow Road and noted the vehicle had two different licence plates, one of which had been reported stolen.

Investigation revealed the driver is prohibited as a result of a dangerous driving conviction. A 39-year-old Milton man is charged with driving while prohibited and possessing stolen property. He will appear in court February 3.

Arrest after employee assaulted

A Guelph man was arrested after an employee of a south-end business was assaulted and threatened while attempting to stop a thief Thursday.

Approximately 6:20 p.m. an employee of a business at Stone Road Mall observed a man placing several items into a large bag and notified her colleagues. When the man left the store without attempting to pay the employee followed him and asked him to return the items.

The man responded by threatening the employee and then pushing her aside to leave the mall. He was followed by a second employee who was on the phone with police. Officers located him a short distance away and found him to be in possession of 19 stolen items which were recovered and returned.

A 24-year-old Guelph man is charged with theft under $5,000, assault and uttering threats. He will appear in court January 30.

Pickup and tools stolen

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a pickup containing approximately $10,000 in tools was stolen from a west-end home.

Approximately 8 a.m. Thursday, a resident near Downey Road and Woodland Glen Drive reported his grey 2023 Ford F150 Tremor had been stolen from the driveway. Two males were caught on security video using a long tool to unlock the truck after arriving in another vehicle.

The truck has a tonneau cover and the logo for a woodworking company on the back window. A quantity of tools and materials valued at $10,000 were inside the truck.

He was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
