Arrest after downtown home entered

A Guelph man was arrested after a downtown residence was entered while the resident was home.

Just after 10 a.m. December 26, a resident of Fountain Street East discovered a stranger inside his unit. The man had entered through an unlocked side door.

As the intruder was leaving he dropped a wallet, which was picked up by the victim. The victim then realized his own wallet was missing. Officers checked the area and located the suspect, who still had the victim’s wallet.

A 37-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter and theft under $5,000. He will appear in court February 6.

 

Truck, trailer theft attempt

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after two trucks and several trailers were damaged at a north-end business in an apparent theft attempt.

On Saturday police were called to a business near Woodlawn Road West and Arrow Road. Approximately 4 a.m. Friday, three males entered the property and drilled out the locks on two trucks and several trailers. They also moved one of the trucks and attempted unsuccessfully to connect it to a trailer.

Eventually the suspects left on foot. It is not known if anything was stolen and no damage estimate is yet available.

Impaired, assault charges following collision

A Guelph man faces assault and impaired driving charges following a disturbance in a parking lot Saturday.

Just after 8:30 p.m. police were called to an apartment building on Willow Road. A man told police he was sitting in his vehicle with friends when another resident reversed and struck it. The two men exited their vehicles and began arguing, during which the victim reported his neck was grabbed and squeezed.

The suspect ran inside the building, but a short time later came back outside and tried to drive away. He was stopped by officers, who detected a strong odour of alcohol and observed open containers of beer inside the vehicle.

The driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 37-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, careless driving and assault causing bodily harm. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court January 6.

Also over the Christmas holidays, an 18-year-old Puslinch woman was arrested for impaired driving after police were called to a collision at 7:40 a.m. December 24. A woman lost control of her car at Norwich Street East and Mitchell Street, striking a snowbank and causing significant damage to the car.

The driver was arrested for impaired driving and novice driver having alcohol in her system. Her licence was suspended for 90 days and her vehicle was impounded for seven days. She will appear in court January 13.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.

 

Arrest after foot chase

A Guelph woman wanted on several outstanding warrants was arrested following a foot chase early Sunday.

Just after 2 a.m. officers on routine patrol pulled into the parking lot of an apartment building near Woolwich Street and Speedvale Avenue West. A woman who had been standing in front of the building fled when she saw the cruiser and jumped a fence.

Officers pursued the woman who ran through several backyards and jumped several fences before officers caught her. Investigation revealed she was wanted on three different warrants.

A 37-year-old Guelph woman is charged with two counts each of theft under $5,000 and breach of probation as well as failing to attend court. She was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in court January 6.

 

Car fire closes downtown parkade

A car fire which caused the closure of a busy downtown parkade on the weekend is not believed to be suspicious.

Approximately 7:30 a.m. emergency services were called to the West Parkade on Macdonell Street for a vehicle on fire. The 2015 Toyota was destroyed and another Toyota parked next to it sustained significant damage.

The investigation is ongoing but the fire is not believed to be suspicious.
