Arrest after power of attorney theft

A Guelph man faces charges after his former father-in-law’s bank account was cleaned out.

Allegations first arose in summer 2024 that the man was abusing his power of attorney to steal from the victim, who is in his 90s, however the victim did not want to pursue charges.

A Guelph Police Service officer spoke to the suspect in July 2024, and warned him to stop accessing the victim’s account. Since that time nearly $14,000 has been transferred from the account.

On Tuesday a 73-year-old Guelph man was arrested for theft over $5,000, possessing proceeds of crime over $5,000 and theft by person holding power of attorney. He will appear in court February 6.

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a break-in at a south end business.

Just after 4 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to an alarm call at a business near Gordon Street and Lowes Road and found the front window smashed out. It is not known if anything was stolen.

Security video showed two males attending the business, including one in a beige winter coat and full-face mask.

Man wanted for three impaireds arrested again

A Guelph man wanted for failing to attend court on three impaired driving charges was arrested following a collision Tuesday afternoon.

Just before 5:30 p.m. police were called for a two-vehicle collision at Willow Road and Edinburgh Road North. Investigation revealed one of the drivers was wanted for several outstanding charges, including impaired driving and dangerous driving.

He was arrested on the warrant and while speaking to him officers detected an odour of alcohol on his breath. After failing a roadside breath test he was transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Officers learned the man had been driving his mother’s vehicle without her permission.

A 45-year-old Guelph man is further charged with impaired driving, taking a vehicle without consent, failing to attend court and several Highway Traffic Act charges. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his mother’s vehicle was impounded for seven days. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.
