Arrest after robbery attempt
A Guelph man is charged with robbery after another man was confronted in the lobby of his apartment building.
Approximately 5:35 p.m. Friday police were called to a building in the city’s east end. The victim in his 30s said he was approached by a stranger who asked him to hand over his ring. When the victim refused the other man pulled out a weapon and lunged at him.
After a brief physical struggle the victim fell down and the other man ran away. Police located the suspect a short time later after a nearby resident called to report someone knocking on her door and trying to get into the home.
A 37-year-old Guelph man is charged with robbery. He was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in court January 16.
Jewelry store break-in
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a break-in Monday morning to a south-end jewelry store.
Shortly before 1 a.m. police received two alarm calls from a business near Kortright Road West and Edinburgh Road South. Officers arrived a few minutes later and observed a rear door had been pried open.
Security video showed four males entering the business and stealing a number of items before fleeing 20 seconds later. The suspects were described as:
1. White male, medium build, black jacket, black balaclava, black pants, black and white Converse shoes, red gloves, crowbar
2. White male, heavy build, black jacket, grey shirt, black shoes, blue medical gloves
3. White male, heavy build, green and grey tracksuit, black balaclava, white shoes, blue medical gloves
4. White male, medium build, black sweater, black pants, black balaclava, black shoes, white gloves

Man rams cruiser, flees with kids
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a man rammed a police cruiser and fled with two young children in his vehicle.
Approximately 7:45 p.m. Friday police were dispatched to an address on Speedvale Avenue East for a report of a suspicious vehicle. Officers found a male sleeping in the driver’s seat with two young children strapped into car seats in the back. The man said he had driven a friend to that address and was waiting for her to come back.
While officers were conducting further investigation, the man reversed the car, striking a cruiser and causing minor damage, then fled at a high speed.
The vehicle was later located near Victoria Road North and Brant Avenue and the children were safe inside a nearby residence. The male was not located.

Drug charges following traffic stop
Two people face drug charges following a traffic stop early Saturday.
Just after 1 a.m. officers were patrolling when they observed an SUV parked near the dead end of Woodlawn Road East. As officers drove past the SUV, the driver started it and tried to leave the area.
A traffic stop was conducted and an open bottle of alcohol was observed in the passenger door. An initial search of the vehicle revealed cannabis gummies and cigarettes in the centre console. During a further search officers located quantities of suspected fentanyl, cocaine, crack cocaine, ecstasy and prescription opioids, as well as scales and other evidence of trafficking.
A 52-year-old Eden Mills woman is charged with five counts of possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking and two counts of possessing controlled substances. A 51-year-old Guelph man is charged with possessing a controlled substance, possessing unmarked cigarettes and having care of a vehicle with open alcohol.
Both will appear in court January 2.
Three impaired charges following collisions
Three Guelph men face impaired driving charges following separate collisions on the weekend.
Approximately 2:15 a.m. Saturday police were called about a four-vehicle collision on Elizabeth Street. Investigation revealed the driver was travelling at a high rate of speed when he lost control, mounted the curb and struck three parked vehicles. The driver was unconscious and had an odour of alcohol on his breath. He was transported to hospital, where a sample of blood was collected for further analysis.
During a search of the vehicle, officers located a glass jar containing suspected cocaine as well as empty baggies and a scale. Further investigation revealed the male was on conditions not to contact a woman who was present in the vehicle during the collision and that they had been involved in an altercation earlier in the evening.
A 27-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, assault, possession for the purpose of trafficking and failing to comply with a release order.
Just before 4 p.m. Saturday, police were notified of a driver who fled a collision in a parking lot on Woodlawn Road East. Officers attended the suspect’s address and observed the damaged vehicle in the driveway. They spoke to the driver and requested a breath sample, which resulted in a fail. Further tests at the police station confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
A 59-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and failing to stop after an accident.
Approximately 2 a.m. Sunday emergency services were called to Gordon Street and Harts Lane. A driver had lost control, mounting the curb and knocking over a hydro pole.
Officers spoke to the driver who was showing signs of impairment. After failing a roadside breath test he was arrested. Further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
A 21-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and novice driver having alcohol in his system.
Each of the accused had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. They were all released with upcoming court dates.
The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
