Arrest in voyeurism incident

A Guelph man has been arrested after a woman reported someone filming her inside a changeroom last September.

On September 5, a 20-year-old Guelph woman reported she was trying on clothes at a store inside Stone Road Mall when she observed someone holding a phone under the stall. She quickly left the changeroom and confronted the male, who denied doing anything wrong and quickly left the mall.

Several residents identified the male after his photo was shared on a recent Guelph Police Service media release. On Tuesday evening a 20-year-old Guelph man attended the police station and was arrested on one count of voyeurism. He will appear in court March 17.

Three impaired driving arrests

Three motorists have been arrested for impaired driving in separate incidents.

Just before 6 p.m. Tuesday, a member of the Guelph Police Traffic Services Unit stopped a car on Victoria Road South near York Road after the cruiser’s automated licence plate reader alerted to a vehicle associated with a suspended driver. While speaking to the driver the officer noted an odour of alcohol.

After failing a roadside breath test he was arrested and transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 36-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and driving while suspended.

At 10:40 p.m. police were dispatched to a west-end address after residents found a man sleeping in a running car in their driveway and were unable to wake him.

Officers arrived a short time later and learned the man had been wakened and taken into a nearby home by a relative. They spoke to him and asked him to provide a roadside breath sample, which resulted in a fail. He was arrested and taken to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 36-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.

At 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, police received reports of a disturbance downtown. Witnesses reported an intoxicated man being physically aggressive with people and driving his car. Officers arrived and found a man lying in the backseat of the car with the keys. The man failed a roadside breath test and was determined to have more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 31-year-old Salem man is charged with impaired driving.

Each of the accused had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. Each were released with upcoming court dates.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be responsible if they choose to consume alcohol or cannabis. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.

Woman sought in counterfeit case

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a woman used a dozen counterfeit bills to purchase a phone late last month.

On January 22, a Guelph man reported two days earlier he had arranged to meet a woman at Stone Road Mall as she was interested in an iPhone he was selling online. The woman handed over $850 in $50 and $100 bills. The seller later learned the bills were fake when he attempted to deposit them.

The woman was described as white, early 20s with dark brown hair and wearing a dark jacket, green track pants and large hoop earrings. It is believed she was a passenger in a white SUV.

Online purchase safety tips

·        Do not meet in a secluded place or invite strangers to your home. Suggest a meet-up during the day at a public location, ideally with video surveillance. The Guelph Police Service offers a Buy & Sell Zone outside the station on Fountain Street East.

·        Have someone come with you to the meet-up. If you can’t have someone come with you, let friends or family know where the meeting is taking place and any details about the buyer or seller.

·        Take screenshots of the advertisements and any contact information provided by the other party.

·        If you are the buyer, do not disclose to the seller how you will be paying if it’s not necessary. If the seller is aware you are attending with cash it creates an opportunity for a robbery to take place.

·        Take note of any vehicles or people associated to the transaction as it is certainly possible that the name they are using online could be false.
