Counterfeit fraud under investigation

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a woman reported receiving $2,000 in counterfeit bills as payment for a bracelet.

On January 10, a Cambridge woman said she attended downtown Guelph to meet a man interested in purchasing a bracelet she listed for sale online. The man handed over 20 $100 bills.

The seller was concerned about the legitimacy of the bills, but the man assured her they were real and left the area with the bracelet.

If anyone has information or recognizes the males in the attached photos they are asked to contact Detective Constable Cameron Keddie at ckeddie@guelphpolice.ca, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.

Online purchase safety tips

·        Do not meet in a secluded place or invite strangers to your home. Suggest a meet-up during the day at a public location, ideally with video surveillance. The Guelph Police Service offers a Buy & Sell Zone outside the station on Fountain Street East.

·        Have someone come with you to the meet-up. If you can’t have someone come with you, let friends or family know where the meeting is taking place and any details about the buyer or seller.

·        Take screenshots of the advertisements and any contact information provided by the other party.

·        If you are the buyer, do not disclose to the seller how you will be paying if it’s not necessary. If the seller is aware you are attending with cash it creates an opportunity for a robbery to take place.

·        Take note of any vehicles or people associated to the transaction as it is certainly possible that the name they are using online could be false.

Impaired charge following collision in mom’s Tesla

A Guelph man is charged with impaired driving after crashing his mom’s Tesla Wednesday evening.

Just before 6 p.m. a Guelph man reported he had been rear-ended on Stone Road West near the Hanlon Expressway and that he believed the other driver was impaired.

A short time later the complainant called back and reported the two had come to an agreement and no longer required police. Officers attended due to the allegation of impairment and located the Tesla in a ditch a short distance away. While speaking to the driver they noted a strong odour of alcohol and signs of impairment.

The man refused to acknowledge a breath demand. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where he refused several times to provide a sample.

A 35-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, refusing to comply with a breath demand and careless driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his mother’s vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court February 20.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be responsible if they choose to consume alcohol and cannabis. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
