Assault, weapons charges following downtown disturbances

Two Guelph men face assault and weapons charges following separate disturbances minutes apart early Thursday.

Approximately 1:50 a.m. police were called to an establishment on Macdonell Street. Two women had been standing outside when they were approached by a male not known to them who began making rude comments about their clothing. When the women asked him to stop, the man pushed one woman to the ground and spat on the other.

As a crowd surrounded the man, he pulled out a knife and began waving it around. A male bystander tried to intervene and was pushed. Eventually witnesses were able to disarm the man and hold him for police.

A 30-year-old Guelph man is charged with three counts of assault, assault with a weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He will appear in court February 17.

While officers were on scene, they were approached by patrons from another nearby business reporting a man had assaulted numerous people.

Officers spoke to the man, who was clearly intoxicated and becoming more aggressive. As officers attempted to arrest him for public intoxication, he began to physically resist and would not comply with demands. During the arrest the man spat blood in the face of an officer.

Investigation revealed the man had been causing issues inside the business by repeatedly drinking another person’s drink. When a staff member attempted to remove him the man punched him in the face.

A 28-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault, resisting arrest and public intoxication. He will appear in court February 20.

Car stolen from gym during workout
