Second arrest in jewelry store break-ins
A Hamilton man has been arrested for his role in two Guelph jewelry store break-ins late last year.
Just after 4 a.m. November 3, five men attended a jewelry store in the west end and pried open a rear door to gain access. Jewelry valued at more than $8,500 was stolen.
On November 17, just after midnight, three men attended a south-end jewelry store and pried open a rear door. Several display cases were smashed and thousands of dollars in jewelry was stolen.
At 12:45 a.m. December 8, four men attended the same south-end business broke into the same south-end business but fled a moments later.
In all three incidents the suspects wore hoodies, gloves and face coverings.
The Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft Unit took over the investigations and was able to identify suspects with assistance from the Hamilton Police Service.
On December 11, four men were arrested by Hamilton Police. A 42-year-old Toronto man was returned to Guelph that day and charged with break and enter, disguise with intent and possessing break-in tools. He will appear in court February 17.
On Tuesday, a 36-year-old Hamilton man was returned to Guelph and arrested for two counts each of break and enter, disguise with intent and possessing break-in tools. He was held for a bail hearing February 2.
The investigation is ongoing.
Two attempt vehicle thefts
The Guelph Police Service is investigating two attempted vehicle thefts early Tuesday which appear to be related.
On Tuesday morning a resident near Clairfields Drive West and Gibbs Crescent reported someone trying to enter his 2023 Ford F-350. Security video showed a man approaching the truck just after 4 a.m. and trying unsuccessfully to gain entry. The video also showed a small black car leaving the scene.
Also Tuesday morning, a resident of Downey Road reported she found the door ajar on her 2025 Lincoln Navigator, prompting her to review camera footage. The footage showed a black car parking in the neighbour’s driveway and a passenger from the car entering the Lincoln. He was able to start the vehicle but could not drive it due to a security feature the owner had installed.
The incidents remain under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Jonathan Schleen at 519-824-1212, ext. 7570, email jschleen@guelphpolice.ca, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.
The Guelph Police Service encourages residents to take steps to protect themselves from auto theft. This can include parking indoors when possible or in well-lit areas, ensuring vehicle doors and windows are closed and locked, employing anti-theft devices to prevent vehicles from being started or steered and using devices to block signals from electronic keys. Please report suspicious activity around unattended vehicles, especially during overnight hours.
Impaired charge following collision
A Guelph man is charged with impaired and dangerous driving following a two-vehicle collision Tuesday evening.
Approximately 8:25 p.m. a woman called to report her car was just rear-ended at Eramosa Road and Delhi Street and she believed the other driver was impaired. Officers arrived and spoke to the male driver, who had a strong odour of alcohol on his breath and was showing signs of impairment. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests indicated he had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
Investigation revealed the man is required to have an ignition interlock on his vehicle as a result of a previous impaired driving conviction.
A 37-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving and driving while prohibited. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 45 days. He will appear in court March 10.
The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
