Charges after driver flees police

A Cambridge man faces criminal charges after taking off from a Guelph Police Service officer Wednesday evening.

Just after 8 p.m. a member of the Traffic Unit was patrolling on Wellington Street West near the Hanlon Expressway when he clocked an SUV at 96 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone. The officer followed and attempted to pull the vehicle over with his lights and siren activated.

The driver failed to stop, turning onto Edinburgh Road South and then Waterloo Avenue and accelerating to more than 100 km/h in a posted 40 km/h zone. The officer did not pursue in the interests of public safety.

The driver was identified and later turned himself in to police. A 20-year-old Cambridge man is charged with dangerous driving, flight from police, speeding, stunt driving and failing to stop for police. His licence was suspended for 30 days and his vehicle was impounded for 14 days. He will appear in court February 17.
