$4k lost in grandparent scam
Residents are reminded to be cautious after a woman lost $4,000 while believing she was helping her grandson.
On Friday the victim contacted police. She said last Wednesday morning she received a call from someone she believed was her grandson claiming he had been arrested following a collision and needed $4,000 for bail money.
Arrangements were eventually made for someone to attend the victim’s home where the cash was handed over. The victim later contacted her grandson directly and realized she had been scammed.
The investigation is ongoing.
Residents are encouraged to be wary of any telephone call, email or text which requires you to take immediate action. It is always best to independently contact the supposed sender and confirm the legitimacy of the correspondence before taking action.
Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. Even if no financial loss has been sustained, interactions can still be reported to the CAFC. (Occurrence number GU26045337)
Third impaired charge in a month
A York Region man has had his vehicle seized indefinitely after he was charged in Guelph with impaired driving for the third time in less than a month.
Approximately 7:45 p.m. Saturday police received reports of a Chevrolet pickup being driven erratically throughout the city. Officers located the truck in a parking lot on Speedvale Avenue East and watched a man walking unsteadily before getting into the driver’s seat.
Officers blocked the truck in and spoke to the driver, who had a strong odour of alcohol on his breath. He was arrested and transported to the police station, but repeatedly refused to provide a breath sample. Investigation revealed the man was previously arrested for impaired driving on June 15 and July 2 and had his driver’s licence suspended both times. Those matters are still before the courts.
A 23-year-old Schomberg man is charged with impaired driving, refusing to provide a breath sample, two counts failing to comply with a release order and failing to comply with an undertaking. Officers seized his vehicle indefinitely to prevent further offences. He was held for a bail hearing Tuesday. (Occurrence number GU26045674)
