Assault, weapons charges after disturbance

A Guelph man faces assault and weapons charges after police were called to a residence Thursday morning.

Approximately 9:40 a.m. police were called to an address near Gordon Street and Forbes Avenue for reports of a woman screaming. Investigation revealed two people had earlier been involved in an altercation, during which one brandished a knife and chased the other. The victim was not physically injured. The parties are known to each other.

A 58-year-old Guelph man was arrested nearby and charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and forcible confinement. He will appear in court October 9. (Occurrence number GU26046728)

 

Arrest in break-in attempt

A Guelph man was arrested Thursday, a day after a reported attempted break and enter.

On Wednesday police spoke to a resident near Paisley Road and Edinburgh Road North who reported a man had been caught on camera at 2:12 a.m. attempting to enter her backyard. She believed the same man also entered her garage a night earlier and stole two pellet rifles.

At 5:15 a.m. Wednesday a Guelph man had been detained after a suspicious person call on Bagot Street. Property in his possession -- including two pellet rifles – were seized as suspected stolen property but had not yet been reported stolen.

On Thursday a 25-year-old Guelph man was arrested for a number of charges including two counts of break and enter, two counts of trespass by night, attempt break and enter, possessing stolen property, possessing weapons for a dangerous purpose and several breaches of court orders. He was held for a bail hearing Friday. (Occurrence numbers GU26046700, GU26046790)

 

Driver had three times legal limit at 11:30 a.m.

Two men were arrested for impaired driving Thursday, including one who had three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system before noon.

Approximately 11:30 a.m. police responded for reports of a possible impaired driver near Stone Road West and Edinburgh Road South. A grey SUV was seen swerving into oncoming lanes and almost striking the curb a number of times.

Officers located the SUV and pulled it over. The driver had an odour of alcohol on his breath and was showing signs of impairment. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests revealed he had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 27-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle – which is registered to his father – was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court August 28.

At 11:40 p.m. Thursday, an officer patrolling near Paisley Road and Imperial Road South observed a vehicle twice crossing into oncoming lanes and pulled it over. The driver was showing signs of impairment and failed a roadside breath test. He was arrested and taken to the police station, where tests revealed he had more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 43-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court August 25.

Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home.
