Impaired, drug charges laid
A Guelph man faces impaired and drug charges after police found him passed out in a vehicle early Tuesday.
Just after 1 a.m. officers were dealing with an unrelated call at a south-end townhouse complex when they saw the man unconscious in the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle. Officers noticed a white powdered substance near the man’s lip and could see two baggies of suspected cocaine inside the car.
He was removed from the vehicle and found to be showing signs of impairment. A further search of the vehicle revealed an empty alcohol bottle behind the driver’s seat.
The man was placed under arrest and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
A 59-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation and possessing a controlled substance. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court September 1.
The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be responsible if they choose to consume alcohol and cannabis. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Chevy Cruze stolen
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a car was stolen from a west-end apartment building.
On Monday morning a resident near Willow Road and Alma Street North reported his white four-door 2015 Chevrolet Cruze missing. He had parked the car in the lot Saturday morning.

The Guelph Police Service encourages residents to take steps to protect themselves from auto theft. This can include parking indoors when possible or in well-lit areas, ensuring vehicle doors and windows are closed and locked, employing anti-theft devices to prevent vehicles from being started or steered and using devices to block signals from electronic keys. Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle
Residents are reminded not to leave valuables inside unattended vehicles.
In the last week the Guelph Police Service has responded to at least 15 reports of thefts from vehicles. In five of those cases wallets or loose credit and debit cards were among the items stolen and in all five instances cards were later used to make a series of purchases and withdrawals requiring further investigation.
Residents are urged to keep vehicle windows and doors closed and locked when unattended, and do not leave valuables inside. Please report suspicious activity around homes and unattended vehicles.
