Staff assaulted, threatened by thief

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after an employee of a west-end business was assaulted and threatened during a theft Wednesday afternoon.

At 3:50 p.m. employees of a business on Silvercreek Parkway North reported a man had left the business with a shopping cart full of groceries. When an employee tried to stop him the man struck the employee with the cart and threatened to stab staff members. No physical injuries were reported and no weapon was seen.

The man was described as white, in his 30s, 5’10,” thin with brown hair. He was wearing a grey hoodie and jeans. He was accompanied by a woman described as white with red hair to her waist and wearing a red sweater and black pants.

Honda SUVs popular with east-end thieves

Honda SUVs were popular with thieves Wednesday, with five reported stolen from the east end within a few hours of each other.

As previously reported, at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday a resident near Eastview Road and Victoria Road North reported their white 2024 Honda CR-V had just been stolen from the driveway. The vehicle was found abandoned a short distance away with damage to the rear end and side window.

At 6:25 a.m. a resident near Watson Parkway and Fleming Drive reported their white 2025 CR-V had been stolen during the early morning hours. It was later recovered with some damage in a parking lot on Auden Road.

Five minutes later a resident near Grange Road and Starwood Drive reported his wife’s white 2025 CR-V had been stolen from the driveway overnight.

At 8:20 a.m. a resident near Grange Road and Auden Road reported his silver 2025 CR-V had been stolen from the parking lot of his condo. Some of the complainant’s property including a wallet was later recovered on a nearby street.

Just after 11 a.m. Wednesday a resident near Grange Road and Bradson Drive reported his grey 2026 Acura MDX had been stolen. Security video showed two individuals climbing onto the vehicle and smashing the sunroof to gain entry.

All of the thefts remain under investigation. It is not known if they are related. Anyone with information is asked to call the Guelph Police Service at 519-824-1212.

The Guelph Police Service encourages residents to take steps to protect themselves from auto theft. This can include parking indoors when possible or in well-lit areas, ensuring vehicle doors and windows are closed and locked, employing anti-theft devices to prevent vehicles from being started or steered and using devices to block signals from electronic keys. Impaired arrest after parked car hit

A Guelph man is charged with impaired driving after a parked car was hit Wednesday night.

At 8:45 p.m. police were called to an address near Metcalfe Street and Kensington Street where they found a pick-up had struck a parked SUV.

Officers spoke to the driver of the truck and noted signs of impairment. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests revealed he had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 63-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and careless driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was seized for seven days. He will appear in court September 1.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be responsible if they choose to consume alcohol and cannabis. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home.
