Man arrested after home invasion

A Guelph man faces several charges after a neighbour was attacked inside his own home early Wednesday.

Approximately 12:25 a.m. police were called for a disturbance at an apartment on Gordon Street. The victim was awakened by the sound of someone smashing his air conditioner and awoke to find a man in his unit holding a hammer. He was struck in the face with the hammer and briefly strangled before breaking free and fleeing the unit.

Once outside he discovered his vehicle had been extensively damaged with all the windows and lights smashed. Officers arrived and arrested the man’s neighbour. The two are known to each other. The victim was transported to hospital for treatment.

A 21-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and mischief over $1,000. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday. (Occurrence number GU26044770)

 

Man struck with baseball bat

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a man was struck in the head with a baseball bat Wednesday morning.

Just before 2 a.m. a woman called police to report she had been threatened by another woman with a baseball bat near Gordon Street and Nottingham Street. The complainant said she was approached by a woman who asked to use her phone. When the complainant declined the other woman removed a green and black bat from her backpack and uttered a threat while briefly chasing her.

A short time later police received a second call reporting a man had been struck. Officers arrived to find the victim with a large bump on the back of his head. He was transported to hospital for treatment.

Arrest after theft, assault

A Guelph man has been arrested after a woman was assaulted last month while trying to stop a theft from her home.

On June 20 police were called to an address near Eastview Road and Auden Road. The complainant said she caught a man trying to remove tools and other items from her residence. When she intervened the man kicked her in the abdomen, causing her to fall down. He also took and smashed her phone when she tried to call police.

On Tuesday morning a 33-year-old Guelph man was arrested during a traffic stop. He is charged with assault, theft under $5,000 and mischief under $5,000. (Occurrence number GU26040507)
