Arrest in vandalism spree

A Guelph man faces a number of charges after several west-end homes were damaged Tuesday afternoon.

At 5:50 p.m. police were called to an address near Elmira Road North and Flaherty Drive. The homeowner reported a man had repeatedly thrown a crate at their front door -- causing damage to the frame – and then destroyed their mailbox. The suspect then walked next door and threw a watering can, smashing the glass front door.

He then attended another nearby house where he entered the open garage and knocked over an e-bike before repeatedly kicking the home’s front door, causing minor damage.

A 35-year-old Guelph man was located in the area and arrested for three counts of mischief under $5,000 and being unlawfully in a dwelling. He will appear in court September 15. (Occurrence number GU26041264)

Construction site targeted again

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after an east-end construction site previously targeted by vandals was hit again.

Tuesday morning police were called to the area of Eramosa Road and Brant Avenue. Two youths were caught on video the previous evening smashing windows on two vehicles parked in the construction zone.

On Monday the complainant had reported thousands of dollars in damage to vehicles, equipment and a site trailer over the weekend. It is not known if the incidents are related.

The investigations are ongoing. Anyone with information about the latest incident is asked to call Constable Liam Gallivan at 519-824-1212, ext. 7617, or email lgallivan@guelphpolice.ca. (Occurrence number GU26041136)

Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Jessica Belcastro at 519-824-1212, ext. 7287, or email jbelcastro@guelphpolice.ca. (Occurrence number GU26041132)

Impaired driving charge

A Fergus man is charged with impaired driving following a traffic stop in Guelph early Wednesday.

Just after midnight, police received a driving complaint and located the involved vehicle on Edinburgh Road South. While speaking to the driver officers noted a strong odour of alcohol on his breath and observed signs of impairment.

After failing a roadside breath test he was arrested and transported to the police station, where further tests showed he had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system. Investigation revealed the man is also a prohibited driver.

A 44-year-old Fergus man is charged with impaired driving and driving while prohibited. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 45 days. He will appear in court August 4.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be responsible if they choose to consume alcohol and cannabis. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911. (Occurrence number GU26041324)
