Beware of phone plan scams
Police are reminding residents to be cautious of unsolicited calls from individuals claiming to represent mobile phone providers and offering discounted or competitive phone plans.
In this type of scam, the caller may request personal identification, credit card information, and a photograph under the pretense of setting up a new account or verifying identity. The information is then used to open an unauthorized account and order a new mobile phone. In some cases, the victim receives a phone instead of the promised SIM card and is later instructed to return the device to an address that does not belong to the legitimate provider.
Residents are encouraged to independently verify any phone plan offer directly with the provider using a trusted phone number or official website before providing personal or financial information. Do not send identification documents, credit card details, or photos in response to unsolicited calls, texts, or emails.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted should contact their mobile provider directly, notify their financial institution, monitor their accounts, and report the incident to police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
