Man arrested after serious assault at bar

A Georgetown man was arrested after an incident at a Guelph bar that left a man with serious head injuries.

Approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday emergency services were called to a business on Woodlawn Road West. Investigation revealed a man had become involved in a verbal dispute with two others inside the business.

During the dispute, a 21-year-old Mississauga man was struck in the face and knocked unconscious. He was transported to hospital for treatment of serious head and facial injuries. A second man sustained minor facial injuries.

A 20-year-old Georgetown man was arrested for aggravated assault and assault. He was held for a bail hearing Monday. (Occurrence number GU26016842)

 

Four south-end homes entered

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after four south-end homes were entered while unoccupied over the weekend.

Approximately 10:30 p.m. Saturday a resident near Gosling Gardens and Clair Road West reported he arrived home to find the front door had been kicked open. Clothing and a laptop were reported missing.

Minutes later, police were called to a home on Clairfields Drive West after the homeowner arrived home to find the front door forced open. Jewelry was reported missing.

Sunday evening, police were called to a home near Victoria Road South and Bard Boulevard. The owners came home from a trip after a neighbour observed their front door had been forced open. The home had been ransacked and a laptop and tablet were stolen.

Later Sunday night, officers were called to another home on Clairfields Drive West which had been entered after the lock on the front door was damaged. Several drawers had been rummaged through but nothing was reported missing.

It is not known if the incidents are related. $40k lost in bank fraud

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a woman lost approximately $40,000 in a bank fraud.

Sunday afternoon, the victim in her 20s contacted police to report the fraud. She had received an email allegedly from her bank asking her to log in to read a secure message. She clicked on the link and provided her log-in information, however a short time later received messages that her accounts had been emptied and she was locked out of her accounts.

The victim said approximately $40,000 had been taken from her accounts and possibly another $10,000 from investment accounts. The incident remains under investigation.

Residents are encouraged to be wary of any telephone call, email or text which requires you to take immediate action. It is always best to independently contact the supposed sender and confirm the legitimacy of the correspondence before taking action.

Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. Even if no financial loss has been sustained, interactions can still be reported to the CAFC. (Occurrence number GU26016934)

 

Robbery charge after altercation

A Guelph man is charged with robbery after an altercation Sunday outside a local business.

Just after noon police were called to a business on Eramosa Road. An employee followed a man out of the store after he failed to pay for several items. The suspect dropped the items when confronted, but then assaulted the employee by grabbing his arm causing minor injuries.

A 33-year-old Guelph man was located a short time later and arrested for robbery. He will appear in court April 21. (Occurrence number GU26016933)

 

Impaired charge after collision

A Guelph man is charged with impaired driving after a collision Sunday afternoon.

Just before 4:30 p.m. police were called to Kortright Road West and Edinburgh Road South for a two-vehicle collision. No injuries were reported.

One of the drivers had an odour of alcohol on his breath. After failing a roadside breath test he was arrested and transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 52-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court May 1.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be responsible if they choose to consume alcohol and cannabis. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home.
