High-speed joyride leads to charges

A Guelph man faces several charges after a vehicle was stolen from a Guelph dealership Tuesday and taken on a high-speed joyride.

Approximately 3:45 p.m. a 2024 Hyundai was stolen from a dealership on Woodlawn Road West after the keys were left inside. The vehicle’s GPS tracker showed it travelling between Guelph and Fergus, at one point reaching 151 km/h.

Just after 5:30 p.m. the vehicle was located outside a business near Watson Parkway North and Eastview Road. Members of the Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft Unit located a man in the area and recovered the key to the vehicle.

A 35-year-old Guelph man is charged with theft of motor vehicle, dangerous driving, four counts of driving while prohibited and two counts of breaching a probation order. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.

The Guelph Police Service encourages residents to take steps to protect themselves from auto theft. This can include parking indoors when possible or in well-lit areas, ensuring vehicle doors and windows are closed and locked, employing anti-theft devices to prevent vehicles from being started or steered and using devices to block signals from electronic keys. Please report suspicious activity around unattended vehicles, especially during overnight hours. (Occurrence number GU26017420)
