Nearly $20k lost in bank scam
Residents are reminded to be cautious when dealing with unknown individuals after a Guelph man lost nearly $20,000 to a bank scam.
This week, a man in his 90s reported he was contacted by someone he believed was from his bank as the bank’s toll-free phone number was on his call display. During the lengthy call he provided banking information and then was told his debit and credit cards had been compromised and that a courier would attend his address and collect them.
A short time later a man came to the victim’s home and was given the cards. The victim later realized his cards had been used to make $2,500 in cash withdrawals and almost $17,000 in purchases in Waterloo Region.
The incident is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Layne Beaver at 519-824-1212, ext. 7607, email lbeaver@guelphpolice.ca, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.

Charges laid after hit and run
A Burlington man faces several charges after a hit and run earlier this month at a Guelph business.
The evening of March 9, a collision occurred in the parking lot of a business on Speedvale Avenue West. One of the drivers claimed he was going to retrieve his documents, but then fled the scene at a high rate of speed.
Wednesday afternoon staff of the business reported the man was back on scene. Officers attended and observed damage on his pickup consistent with the earlier collision. The driver was arrested and during a search of the vehicle officers located a quantity of suspected morphine pills in an unmarked bottle. It was also determined on both occasions the man was in the company of a woman with whom he had been ordered to have no contact.
A 45-year-old Burlington man is charged with fail to remain, careless driving, possessing a controlled substance, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, driving while suspended, driving without insurance and driving a vehicle without a permit. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.
Impaired, dangerous driving charges laid
A Guelph man faces impaired and dangerous driving-related charges following several driving complaints Wednesday evening.
Approximately 5:20 p.m. police began receiving complaints about the driver of a white Mini cutting off other cars, passing in turning lanes and following other cars while gesturing at the drivers.
A short time later the vehicle was located driving in a parking lot on Westwood Road and stopped. Officers detected an odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath and asked him to provide a breath sample, which he repeatedly refused to do.
A 35-year-old Guelph man is charged with refusing to provide a sample and dangerous driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court June 12.
