Replica gun draws large response
A man was arrested at gunpoint after reports Friday night of someone pointing a firearm towards residences.
Just after 10 p.m. police were called to the area of Woolwich Street and Marilyn Drive after a witness reported a man pointing a black handgun at homes in the area.
Several officers responded and the man was located outside and arrested at gunpoint. A replica firearm was recovered.
A 31-year-old Guelph man is charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He will appear in court July 25.
Residents are reminded to be cautious when using or possessing replica firearms in public. They can cause concern if witnesses believe them to be real, and officers responding to such calls must assume the firearm is real until proven otherwise. (Occurrence number GU26028374)
Arrest for truck theft, driving charges
A Guelph man wanted for stealing a truck and trailer last month was arrested Friday.
Members of the Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft Unit were investigating the theft April 6 of a pick-up and dump trailer from a business on Dawson Road and were able to identify a suspect.
On Friday morning he was located outside the City of Guelph driving a vehicle with a stolen licence plate attached. He was arrested when he parked and exited the vehicle. Investigation revealed the man is bound by 18 different driving prohibitions.
A 41-year-old Guelph man is charged with two counts of motor vehicle theft, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and 36 counts of driving while prohibited. He will appear in bail court Tuesday. (Occurrence number GU26028231)
Man found inside vacant unit
A Guelph man was arrested after he was found Friday inside an apartment unit which was supposed to be vacant.
On Friday morning police were called to a building on Speedvale Avenue West after the property manager reported someone possibly inside the unit.
Officers arrived and following a short negotiation the man exited the unit and was arrested. An inspection of the apartment revealed extensive damage throughout. While collecting the man’s belongings, officers recovered an imitation rifle. Investigation revealed he is subject to four weapons prohibitions.
A 32-year-old Guelph man is charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling, mischief under $5,000 and four counts of possessing a weapon contrary to an order. He was held for a bail hearing Monday. (Occurrence number GU26028207)
Arrest for price-switching
A Brampton man has been arrested after four businesses were defrauded by someone scanning cheaper items at self-checkouts.
On February 7, a man attended four businesses within a one-hour period. At each he selected cases of baby formula valued at $97 each, but scanned an item valued at less than $1. The loss to the businesses was nearly $1,000.
A suspect was identified after images were shared in a Guelph Police Service news release. On Friday a 24-year-old Brampton man was arrested for seven counts of fraud under $5,000. He will appear in court July 28. (Occurrence number GU26013029)
