Weapons, drug charges after suspicious person call

A Guelph man faces weapons and drug charges after police were called Monday to a report of a suspicious person downtown.

Just after 8 a.m. police were called to an address on Surrey Street regarding a man on scene who was on a bail order with a condition to stay away from the address. The man fled when police arrived but was located a short time later inside a nearby business.

He was placed under arrest and a search revealed a spring-assisted knife, small amount of suspected methamphetamine, various tools and documents in other people’s names.

A 40-year-old Guelph man is charged with breaching a bail order, breaching a probation order, possessing a restricted weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possessing a controlled substance, possessing stolen property and possessing break-in tools. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.

Arrest in break-in spree

A Guelph man faces several charges after break-ins Tuesday morning at several homes in the Exhibition Park area.

Approximately 9:20 a.m. a resident reported a break-in to her backyard shed overnight. Nothing was stolen but several items were left behind including a knife and a full syringe. Investigation revealed the same suspect entered or attempted to enter four other sheds and garages in the same neighborhood. A number of tools valued at more than $2,500 were reported stolen.

At 1:45 p.m. one of the victims spotted the suspect at an address on Norfolk Street wearing the same distinctive jacket seen on security camera footage. Officers attended and arrested the man, who was found to be in possession of a screwdriver, wrench and wire cutters.

Investigation revealed he had been granted bail earlier this month for similar charges and is bound by a 9 p.m. curfew.

A 24-year-old Guelph man is charged with three counts of break and enter, two counts of attempted break and enter, possessing break-in tools and breaching a bail order. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.

Still trying to identify solicitors who took advantage of man

The Guelph Police Service is still attempting to identify two women who took advantage of a vulnerable man who was trying to help them last month.

The afternoon of October 27, officers were called to a plaza near Edinburgh Road South and Stone Road West. Investigation revealed a 19-year-old man, who has intellectual challenges, had been leaving Walmart when he saw two women with a sign asking for help with money for groceries.

The three entered the store, where the women collected more than $200 in clothing which the man paid for. The women then asked for cash and took the man to a nearby bank, where he withdrew $1,000 and gave it to them. They then went to another store where the man bought groceries and gift cards totaling more than $500.

The women asked for more cash, but when the man tried to withdraw it he had reached his withdrawal limit. He called his mother for assistance and she told him it was a scam.

The mother attended and confronted the women, who were still in their area. Most of the property was recovered.

The suspects were described as being approximately 30 with tanned skin and medium builds. One had red hair in a bun and a long black puffy coat while the other had dark hair in a bun and was wearing a pink and black jacket.

Anyone with information or who recognizes the women in the attached photo is asked to call Constable Matt Simpson at 519-824-1212, ext. 7318, email msimpson@guelphpolice.ca, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.
