Man arrested after hiding in school

A Guelph man faces several charges after he was discovered hiding inside an east-end school Tuesday afternoon.

Police were called to the school approximately 4:15 p.m. after a teacher discovered the man inside a closet while children were still present for an after-school program. It is believed he was waiting for the school to close to commit theft.

The man fled but was located and arrested a short distance away. During a search incident to arrest officers located several credit cards in different names, several sets of car keys, three watches and a number of tools.

A 48-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter, possessing stolen property, possessing break-in tools and unauthorized possession of a credit card. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.

$90k lost in crypto scam

The Guelph Police Service is reminding residents to be very cautious when dealing with individuals online after a man lost $90,000 to a cryptocurrency scam.

On Wednesday a man in his 60s attended the police station to report the loss. In September he clicked on a Facebook ad promoting a supposed cryptocurrency investment opportunity, eventually creating an online account and transferring funds from his bank account.

He was informed his funds had been transferred to another account and had grown to nearly $120,000 US, but when the man tried to withdraw the funds he was told he needed to pay $9,000 in fees. He instead called the police.

Such online scams are very difficult to investigate and the chances of recovering any of the losses is close to nil. Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. Even if no financial loss has been sustained, interactions can still be reported to the CAFC.

Stunt driver taken off the road

A Kitchener man will need to find another way to get around after he was taken off the road for stunt driving Wednesday.

Just after 7 a.m. a Guelph Police Service officer was conducting speed enforcement on Woodlawn Road West at Michener Road when he clocked a Toyota Corolla travelling 109 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone.

A 41-year-old Kitchener man is charged with speeding and stunt driving. His licence was suspended for 30 days and his vehicle was impounded for 14 days.

A stunt driving conviction will attract a minimum licence suspension of one year, a minimum fine of $2,000 and six demerit points.
