Traffic stop leads to drug charges
A Guelph man faces drug trafficking-related charges following a traffic stop Thursday morning.
Just before noon a member of the Guelph Police Traffic Services Unit observed a pick-up which matched the description of one involved in a minor hit and run earlier in the day and pulled it over near Victoria Road South and York Road.
Investigation revealed the driver currently has a suspended licence and was wanted on a warrant from another police service. He was placed under arrest and a search revealed a small baggie in his pocket containing suspected methamphetamine. A search of the truck revealed a large baggie of suspected meth as well as a scale and cash. The seized drugs are valued at approximately $1,200.
A 36-year-old Guelph man is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and two counts of driving while suspended. He will appear in court January 6.
Arrest in stolen vehicle investigation
A Guelph man was arrested Thursday nearly a month after a car was stolen from a south-end driveway.
On October 22, a resident near Scottsdale Drive and Cole Road reported his 2022 Nissan Altima stolen from his driveway. The car was located four days later in a parking lot in the east end.
The Guelph Police Break Enter Auto Theft Unit took over the investigation and identified a suspect. On Thursday he was located on Fife Road and arrested. During a search incident to arrest a spring-loaded knife was found in his pocket.
A 41-year-old Guelph man is charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000 and unauthorized possession of a weapon. He will appear in court January 6.
Impaired, stunt driving charges
A Hamilton man faces impaired and stunt driving charges after a traffic stop in Guelph early Friday.
Approximately 12:20 a.m. a member of the Guelph Police Traffic Services Unit was patrolling near Wellington Street West and Edinburgh Road South when he clocked a vehicle at 106 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone.
He pulled the vehicle over and while speaking to the driver could smell alcohol on his breath. A partially-filled bottle of vodka was observed on the passenger seat. The driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
A 39-year-old Hamilton man is charged with impaired driving, stunt driving, speeding, driving with alcohol available and breaching a probation order. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 14 days. He will appear in court December 2.
Two hours after that arrest, officers were dispatched for reports of an impaired driver leaving a business on Woodlawn Road West. The vehicle was located and pulled over. Officers detected a strong odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath, and as he stepped from the vehicle he was unsteady on his feet and leaned on the vehicle to hold himself up.
He was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 57-year-old Temagami man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court December 30.
