False Comedian Fraud

The Guelph Police Service received a report on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from a local resident that they were defrauded $5,000 from an individual posing as comedian Matt Rife.

The caller advised that they received a message from someone online claiming to be a known comedian. The message sender claimed they were having issues with their banking, and to the caller, they could pay off their credit card for them if they helped deposit a cheque for them. The caller gave the sender their banking information, resulting in them depositing a fraudulent cheque for $5,000 into the account.

The caller was then told to withdraw the money and deposit it into Bitcoin for the sender, to which they complied. The caller was then notified by their bank that they had deposited a fraudulent cheque, and their bank account had been compromised.

The fake Matt Rife continued to contact the caller, with the caller not responding to continued requests.

The caller was put in contact with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and to contact Equifax and TransUnion to place a fraud alert on their credit profile.

The Guelph Police Service would like to remind everyone of the possibility of individuals posing as celebrities in attempts to take advantage of them financially. Please call the Guelph Police Service if you feel you are the victim of any type of fraud.
