Do not share intimate images with strangers
Residents are reminded not to share intimate images or other personal information with strangers after a University of Guelph student had images shared online.
On Monday morning the 18-year-old man called police to report he was being extorted by an unknown individual. The man had been involved in an online chat, during which he shared explicit images and videos. He then received messages threatening to share the content with his friends and family.
The caller stated he believed some of the content had been shared through several Instagram accounts.
Residents are reminded not to share personal details or intimate images online, as these can be captured and used in the commission of crimes.
Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. Even if no financial loss has been sustained, interactions can still be reported to the CAFC.
