A Guelph man faces impaired driving charges after an officer observed him using his car to push a pylon out of the way and drive into a construction zone Tuesday evening.
Just after 6 p.m. a member of the Guelph Police Service Traffic Unit was conducting enforcement near Waterloo Avenue and St. Arnaud Street. Police have received several reports of motorists driving through the construction zone or using a nearby parking lot to drive around it.
The officer saw a driver using his car to push a pylon out of the way and enter the parking lot. The car was stopped and the officer immediately noted a strong odour of alcohol and could see several empty alcohol containers inside the car.
The driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 40-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, disobeying a sign and interfering with a highway fixture. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court December 1.
The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be responsible if they choose to consume alcohol and cannabis. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home.
