Distraction theft attempt reported
Residents are again urged to be cautious when dealing with strangers after another apparent distraction theft attempt Tuesday.
A man reported he was working in his driveway at his home near Grange Road and Cityview Drive North just before 3 p.m. when two individuals in an SUV stopped and asked for directions to a church. The complainant provided the directions and in exchange the couple attempted to give him what appeared to be a gold ring and chain.
The complainant said he was wearing a thick gold chain and suspected the couple were attempting to steal it. He moved away from the SUV and the pair quickly left the area. They were described as a possibly Middle Eastern male and female driving a black SUV.
Police services across Ontario have seen an increase in these distraction-type thefts. Typically, older adults are approached by individuals in a vehicle and engaged in conversation, during which a female passenger will attempt to initiate physical contact by hugging or attempting to place jewelry on the victim. Afterwards the victim realizes their jewelry has been stolen.
Offenders may appear friendly, well‑spoken, or apologetic, and often try to keep the interaction moving quickly to prevent the victim from reacting.
Offenders target moments when attention is divided such as: In grocery store or mall parking lots, on sidewalks or near store entrances, while entering or exiting vehicles, when carrying groceries or other items.
Residents should be extremely cautious when approached by individuals not known to them. Try to avoid physical contact and note any identifying information, such as physical descriptions and licence plates.
Anyone with information about Tuesday’s incident is asked to call Constable Jonathan Schleen at 519-824-1212, ext. 7570, or email jschleen@guelphpolice.ca. (Occurrence number GU26072247)
