Two arrested in series of ‘quick change’ frauds

Two Scarborough men were arrested Tuesday after several south-end businesses reported ‘quick change’ frauds.

Staff from two businesses near Gordon Street and Clair Road reported the men entered and asked to exchange large bills for smaller ones. The men then asked for the bills to be exchanged again, eventually confusing the employees and leaving the store with more money than they had when they entered.

One business reported a loss of $200 while another was out $120.

Officers checked the area and located the two men inside another business, where staff confirmed they had asked to break larger bills. The two were arrested and officers located various denominations of cash on each man. Investigation revealed they had attempted the fraud at a dozen nearby businesses.

Two Scarborough men – aged 30 and 22 – were arrested on 12 counts each of fraud under $5,000. They were held for bail hearings Wednesday. (Occurrence number GU26062716)

Man arrested in home burglary

A man has been arrested after jewelry and an expensive bag were stolen from a south-end residence on the weekend.

Approximately 7:30 a.m. Sunday a man entered a home near Gordon Street and Edinburgh Road South by smashing a decorative window and reaching in to unlock the door.

A Gucci bag and jewelry with a total value of approximately $7,000 were stolen. The suspect’s image was captured by security cameras.

On Tuesday morning a 56-year-old Guelph man was located downtown and arrested for break and enter and theft over $5,000. During a search following his arrest officers recovered a hacksaw and large set of tin snips. He was further charged with possessing break-in instruments. He will appear in court December 8.
