Police called after assault with a weapon
A 32-year-old Guelph man faces an assault with a weapon charge after a resident was struck with a wooden object Thursday morning.
Approximately 7 a.m. Aug. 20, police were called to the area of Waterloo Avenue and Gordon Street after a resident reported being assaulted by someone they did not know. The resident told police the incident began after they asked about a long wooden object the suspect was carrying. The accused became upset and the two separated but re-engaged moments later. The accused then attempted to strike the resident several times with the object.
The resident sustained minor injuries. Officers quickly identified the accused and took him into custody shortly before 9 a.m. During the arrest, officers recovered an item from his property that is believed to have been used in the incident.

Police investigating vehicle theft
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a vehicle was stolen from a business parking lot Thursday morning.
Approximately 10:40 a.m. Aug. 20, police were called to a business in the area of Woolwich Street and Suffolk Street East. A vehicle owner reported their vehicle had been stolen from the parking lot.
The suspect approached the owner, commented on the vehicle and demanded the keys while holding a sharp object. The owner refused and tried to get into the vehicle for safety.
The two struggled and the owner was pulled from the vehicle before the suspect got into the driver’s seat and drove away. The owner sustained minor injuries. The vehicle, described as a dark green older-model sedan, was last seen westbound on Suffolk Street toward Norfolk Street.
The suspect is described as a Black male, approximately 5’8” with a medium build, weighing approximately 135 to 145 pounds, with black hair and a goatee. He was wearing brown construction boots, grey and black shorts, a white crewneck sweater and a black bucket hat.
