Driver charged with impaired operation

A 37-year-old Arkell man faces several charges after police found a vehicle stopped partially in a bike lane Tuesday morning.

Approximately 7:30 a.m. Aug. 18, police received a call from a concerned member of the public about a vehicle near Arkell Road and Gordon Street in Guelph.

Officers located a vehicle stopped diagonally, partially on the road and obstructing a bicycle lane, with one side mounted on the curb and grass. The vehicle also had no rear bumper.

While speaking with the driver, officers observed a glass pipe containing suspected drug residue on the driver’s seat. The man performed poorly on a standard field sobriety test and was arrested.

Further investigation revealed the licence plates were not authorized for the vehicle, which was deemed unfit and had no permit or insurance. The man is charged with impaired operation, three counts of breaching probation, using plates not authorized for a vehicle, driving with no permit, operating a motor vehicle with no insurance, operating an unsafe vehicle and careless driving.

His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

He will appear in court Oct. 2. (Occurrence number GU26055233)
