Police warning residents of water survey scam
A resident reported a suspected scam after receiving a call inviting them to complete a water-usage survey for a chance to win a gift certificate. The next day, the caller told the resident they had won and asked to schedule a water test and prize delivery. Although the resident declined the test, a young male arrived shortly afterward seeking entry into the resident’s home. The resident refused entry and threatened to call police when the male could not provide details about the business he claimed to represent.
The Guelph Police Service would like to remind residents not to let anyone enter your home unless you have invited them and/or you have taken steps to verify who they are. If you are unsure, seek assistance from a family member or friend. If you believe you or a family member may be a victim of a fraud, contact your local police service (the Guelph Police Non-Emergency line is 519-824-5154) and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or report online at www.antifraudcentre.ca. You can also call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or report the incident online at www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca. (Occurrence number GU26038096)
KICKz soccer program wraps up for another year
Wednesday evening marked the final session of the Guelph Police Service’s annual KICKz soccer program. The program provides barrier free access to soccer programming for local youth in partnership with community organizations including Guelph Soccer and the West Village Co-op. This year 45 students from St. Peter’s Catholic Elementary School and Westwood Public School participated. More than 15 members of the Guelph Police Service volunteered their time over the five-week program to teach soccer skills, foster teamwork and create meaningful relationships with young community members. This was the 19th year the program has run.
Youth connect with police over fishing
The Guelph Police Service was proud to once again host their 15th annual Kids and Cops fishing event on June 6. This year 20 youth and 21 sworn and civilian volunteers from the Guelph Police Service, Crown Attorney’s office and community volunteers participated. The event is just one of the many ways officers engage with Guelph youth to strengthen relationships and foster trust. With the help of generous supporters, including the Canadian National Sportfishing Foundation, CBM Aggregates and the Canadian Tire Corporation, the Guelph Police Service is able to provide the fishing equipment necessary to “reel in the big one”. The event is a great way for the youth to develop new skills, build confidence and feel a sense of pride over their fishing accomplishments.
