Speeding incidents
Guelph Police Service stopped two drivers in two separate incidents who were driving more than 40 km/h over the posted speed limit. The first instance took place early Friday morning where a 38-year-old female was clocked going 95 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The second incident took place Saturday afternoon where a 23-year-old male driver was caught driving 81 km/h in a 40km/h safety zone. Both drivers had their licences suspended for 30 days and their vehicles impounded for 14 days.
A stunt driving charge is applicable under the highway traffic act if a driver is driving a motor vehicle at a rate of speed that is 40 km/h or more over the speed limit, if the speed limit is less than 80 km/h. A stunt driving conviction will attract a minimum licence suspension of one year, a minimum fine of $2,000 and six demerit points.
Impaired driving charges
Two drivers are facing impaired driving charges in two separate incidents over the weekend.
At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Feb. 28, officers stopped a 54-year-old male driver for failing to stop at a red light. During the traffic stop, the officers observed signs of impairment and administered a roadside screening test. The accused registered a fail on the test and was subsequently arrested. The driver’s license was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle he was driving was impounded for seven days.
Following a stop at a R.I.D.E. program just after midnight on March 1, officers administered a roadside screening test on a 23-year-old male driver. After registering a fail on a roadside test, the driver was arrested, his license was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle he was driving was impounded for seven days.
The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
Arrest following altercation in bar
Early Sunday morning, a 40-year-old male was arrested on weapons charges. Following an altercation at a downtown bar, the individual was asked to leave the business. Once outside, he pulled out a weapon and uttered threats to staff from the establishment and proceeded to flee the scene. He was arrested by officers a short time later and held for bail. The accused is currently prohibited from possessing weapons under previous orders. (Occurrence number 26013604)
