Guelph police are reminding people to be cautious when searching for a rental after receiving a report of fraud involving a rental listing. Police were told a renter paid money upfront for a room that was not actually available. The investigation is continuing.

Warning signs to watch for include:

  • Being told the keys will be released only after payment.
  • Requests to e-transfer money to a personal email address or to a third party.
  • Rent that is well below market value, or a deal that seems too good to be true.
  • A listing found on social media, with a landlord who is hard to reach or moves the conversation to a messaging app.
