Safe, cash and phones stolen from business

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a safe, cash and several phones were stolen during a break-in at an east-end business.

Police were called to a business near Victoria Road South and York Road shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday. An employee reported the business had been entered sometime after it closed Friday evening.

Impaired arrest after parked car struck

A 40-year-old Guelph man faces several charges after a vehicle struck a parked car in the city’s east end Saturday night.

At approximately 9:15 p.m., police were called after witnesses reported a vehicle had collided with a parked car. Officers located the driver inside the vehicle and observed signs of drug impairment.

The driver was arrested and transported to the police station for an evaluation by a drug recognition expert, who determined his ability to drive was impaired by drugs. A blood sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis.

During a search, officers located suspected fentanyl and cocaine, drug paraphernalia and a passport reported stolen in March 2025.

The man is charged with impaired operation, dangerous driving, possession of stolen property under $5,000, two counts of possessing a controlled substance, driving without insurance and driving without a currently validated permit. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. He was released with an upcoming court date. (Occurrence number GU26065982)

Youth charged with impaired driving

A Guelph youth faces impaired driving and alcohol-related charges after police received a report of a possible impaired driver Sunday afternoon.

At approximately 5:20 p.m., police were told three individuals had left a business near Elmira Road South and Paisley Road in a vehicle, and that one person had an open can of alcohol. Officers located the vehicle a short time later near Speedvale Avenue West and Elmira Road North.

After stopping the vehicle, officers observed open alcohol located near the driver.

The driver failed a roadside alcohol screening test and was arrested. The youth is charged with impaired operation, operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol concentration over the legal limit, driving with open alcohol and driving with alcohol readily available. The youth was released with an upcoming court date. (Occurrence number GU26066347)

Police investigate gas station robbery

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a masked man armed with a knife robbed a west-end gas station early Monday.

At approximately 3:50 a.m., police were called to a business near Willow Road and Silvercreek Parkway North. A man entered the store, approached the counter with a kitchen-style knife and demanded money. He took a small quantity of cash before leaving the store and running east across Silvercreek Parkway.

The employee was not physically injured and no customers were inside the store at the time.

The man was described as tall with a heavier build. He was wearing black clothing, including a hooded sweatshirt and face covering, and may have been wearing a red hat. A police canine unit searched the area but did not locate him.

Man charged after youths threatened with knife

A 34-year-old man faces several charges after three youths were reportedly threatened with a knife in downtown Guelph Monday afternoon.

At approximately 12:25 p.m., the youths were waiting to cross at Paisley and Norfolk streets when a man sitting nearby confronted them. As they walked east, the man allegedly followed them, yelled at them and produced a knife. The youths ran from the area and called police once they were safe.

Officers located and arrested the man at a Macdonell Street hotel approximately two-and-a-half hours later. A search of his belongings revealed a folding knife and suspected methamphetamine. The man is charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possessing a controlled substance and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order. He was held for a bail hearing. (Occurrence number GU26066526)

Copper valued at $40,000 stolen from business

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after approximately $40,000 worth of copper was stolen from a south-end business.

Police were called to a business near Laird Road and Southgate Drive shortly before 11 a.m. Monday. Copper pieces, with an approximate total weighing 600 to 700 kilograms, had been taken from a storage area behind the building.

The theft is believed to have occurred between Friday night and Saturday morning. Given the size and weight of the materials, police believe those responsible may have used a van or pickup truck and made several trips.
